bigstock Senior Suffering From Depressi 183475090 2Depression affects millions of Americans every year. Significant depression, also commonly referred to as clinical depression, should be diagnosed by a trained and licensed medical professional only. No one should diagnose themselves or someone they know, whether it’s a parent, grandparent, or anyone else. When someone we care about is struggling emotionally, we often want to step in and help wherever we can. An aging senior, for example, may be dealing with a host of challenges leading to depressive symptoms, and if they’re living alone, missing friends, and wishing they could enjoy life more, assisted living could be an option to discuss.

How would assisted living help?

There are potentially dozens of legitimate reasons a person in their 70s, 80s, or 90s is struggling emotionally. It could be due to health concerns, side effects from prescription medications, spending most of their time alone (humans are social creatures by nature and the more time spent alone, the greater the risk of emotional challenges), and so on.

Assisted living offers these men and women an opportunity to have vital support from qualified staff and to be surrounded by other seniors who likely share at least some common interests.

Why it’s not always easy to talk about assisted living with some seniors.

There are going to be times when an aging person doesn’t want to hear various ideas from a family member or friend. One of these topics might include assisted living.

There could be a number of reasons for that, but the most common is a misunderstanding about what this senior living option is all about. Many people immediately think of nursing homes when they hear ‘assisted living’ and they won’t hear any more, if the topic is dropped.

What they need to realize is the two are completely different entities.

At assisted living, seniors have the opportunity to live as independently as they want and can, given their physical limitations, emotional challenges, or health issues. They can often take part in various activities, play games, exercise, go for walks, enjoy entertainment, or simply spend some quiet time alone in their room.

When most seniors move into a quality assisted living facility, within a few days they often report an improvement in their emotional outlook. They feel happier.

And that’s one of the best reasons anyone should at least talk about assisted living with an aging parent or other family member who is advancing in years and showing signs of some level of distress, depression, or anxiety while living alone.
