Senior Care in San Antonio, TX

Assisted Living in Shavano ParkTrying to figure out the various senior care options can be challenging, especially if you’ve never had any previous experience with it. There are three main ones, but that’s not all there is. Within each there are different levels of care that you can find for your elderly loved one, including assisted living.

The 3 main options that you’ll find, though, are:

  • Home care
  • Assisted living
  • Nursing home care

We’ll take a closer look at each of these here.

Home Care

There are many facets of home care, from a home aide (someone who assists with basic care needs such as toileting, bathing, and getting dressed) to nurses who come to the patient’s home.

Being that there are many different aspects to home care, the costs can vary as well. The main benefit with this option is that the elderly patient can remain in their house, apartment, or other structure they live in.

Assisted Living

This is one of the more popular types of senior care today as the facilities and amenities have dramatically improved. Today, the average assisted living facility resembles a 4 or 5-star hotel rather than a place for seniors to get a high level of care.

They have restaurants, activities, and transportation services for the seniors. Many of them also have beautifully landscaped grounds for the residents to get outside and enjoy the nice weather.

In these assisted living facilities, residents have access to a high level of direct and indirect care, including assistance with bathing and toileting, some nursing care (depending on the facility) reminders to take medication, and more. They can also make new friends and be close to old ones who happen to live in the same facility.

Nursing Home Care

Nursing homes are the most notorious facilities for elderly care. They earned a terrible reputation through neglect and being understaffed and overpopulated, but today’s nursing homes are significantly better than those days.

It’s the most expensive form of elderly care and is generally reserved for those individuals who require a high level of direct nursing care, such as individuals recovering from a stroke, hip replacement surgery, a major heart attack, and more. Individuals at the end stages of certain terminal illness may also find nursing homes a more comfortable alternative to other forms of care.

If you are trying to determine what option is best for you or a loved one, look into assisted living. It’s a special type of care that occurs within these facilities today and they could be just what you’re looking for.
