Assisted Living in Hollywood Park TXThe topic of home care can be a sensitive one, especially dealing with aging parents. There could be a number of reasons why some people avoid talking about these issues, but most commonly it involves misconceptions about what assisted living offers.

When you want to sit down and talk about assisted living with an aging parent or grandparent, especially if you know they might be resistant to the idea initially, here are three things to keep in mind before beginning that conversation.

First, learn as much as you can about it.

If you don’t know all that much about assisted living, how are you possibly going to discuss it openly and honestly? How can you answer questions your elderly mother or father may have?

Learn everything you can about it, including any types of activities they have, the type of rooms they offer, certain programs, the dining facilities, and so forth. When you learn all that you can about a particular assisted living facility, you will be equipped to have a genuine and honest conversation about it as well as answer questions this senior is certainly going to have.

Second, be honest.

Don’t try to gloss over any particular topic or argument the senior has. Be straightforward and honest. If there’s something you don’t know, say so. Tell him or her you will look into it and find out.

Keep in mind your aging loved one may have preconceived notions or misconceptions about assisted living and you don’t want to make it out to be something it’s not if you simply don’t know.

Third, listen.

There could be a lot of things your aging parent is trying to tell you during a discussion about assisted living. Be willing to listen to what he or she has to say.

Listening is one of the most important yet overlooked communication skills we possess. If you listen, you may discover a wealth of insight and information about the struggles they face, their concerns, anxieties, frustrations, and much more.

When you listen openly and honestly, you may find common ground and even an underlining desire for more than what they have right now. An assisted living facility can often offer aging seniors an opportunity to experience life on their terms.

It can help improve quality of life for many seniors, and as long as you listen to what your aging mother or father has to say, you should be in a good position to help them see the value assisted living can offer.
