What Can We Learn from Parkinson’s Care That Can Be Applied to Other Seniors?
For a person diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, the road ahead can seem overwhelming. Family and friends often rally around these men and women, and as the symptoms become more significant, they require more care.
Assisted living can be an incredible asset for men and women of advanced years who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. But even for seniors who haven’t dealt with Parkinson’s or other serious ailments like it, there’s a lot we can learn from how these men and women are cared for that can be applied to those who have chosen assisted living.
Anticipating life’s changes.
Life changes. That’s true for everyone. As we get older, our body changes. We begin to lose strength. Even if we are working out and exercising regularly, we will lose muscle mass as we move through our 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond.
That means the things we were able to do in our younger years with ease will eventually, one day, become more challenging. Anticipating life’s little changes can help us focus more on safety concerns.
Assisted living provides aging men and women a wonderful opportunity to live in a safe and comfortable environment. Instead of waiting until something bad happens, like a slip and fall accident getting out of bed and trying to make it to the bathroom in the middle of the night, a senior can choose assisted living and be surrounded by grab bars, safety features, and supportive staff around-the-clock.
Having extra physical support.
When a person is dealing with the advancing symptoms of Parkinson’s, they often have family or some type of caregiver assisting them when needed. They will reach a point when they can no longer control certain parts of their body, making it difficult to walk, lift objects, and perform other basic tasks.
At assisted living, seniors have an opportunity to gain that type of physical support when needed. There are certain limitations, of course, as it’s nothing like other facility type of care, but if this senior needs assistance for a little while here and there, the staff at assisted living will be responsive to those needs.
We can see how a person with this challenge can be supported in the right environment. We can then learn how to better support aging seniors and encourage them to consider assisted living for their future.
