You have been trying to get your mother to listen to you about moving out of her house and into an assisted living facility. You recognize the fact that she is struggling with her own basic care and even though she has been relying on you, it’s been a burden for you.
You don’t like to think about it as a burden, considering all she has done for you throughout your life, but that is what it is when you simply don’t have the time and have to give up other things in your life just to be there for her.
If your mother is not listening to you about assisted living, it’s probably time to try something different. Try listening to what she has to say about her own care, and even her own impressions about a different living situation.
Too often we get caught up in our own expectations. We think we know what’s best for our loved ones and fail to recognize their opinions. We think they’re being stubborn because they simply don’t recognize the challenges they are facing in their life at any given time. In truth, no one knows their own limitations better than the people who have to deal with them on a regular basis.
While talking about various living situations, your mother may be telling you what she would prefer, but you could be so focused on pushing assisted living that you’re not listening to those things. That doesn’t mean other options are going to work out best for her. Maybe she requires assistance during the overnight hours getting out of bed and going to the bathroom. She might need help taking a shower in the morning. She may have challenges doing the laundry or preparing her own meals. Home care aides can certainly help with this, but what if she is not spending any time with friends because she can’t get to see them?
Maybe her friends are at assisted living and she doesn’t realize this.
You also can gather as much information about the benefits of assisted living, the activities that certain facilities offer, transportation services, and much more. The more you know about something like assisted living, the easier it’s going to be for you to convince your elderly mother that this is the right option for her at this time. Just don’t forget to listen to what she has to say about it. She may not be refusing it; she may simply need more information about it.
